Pilot Baseball opens season with 13-4 win over LC

February 13, 2004

Head Coach Rocke Musgraves and his LSUS Pilots took the field for the first time in the 2004 season Friday afternoon to take on the Louisiana College Wildcats. LSUS erupted for 13 runs on 13 hits and went on to defeat the Wildcats by a score of 13-4.

Returning senior pitcher Mitchel Person set the tone for the Pilots pitching four scoreless innings. A walk in the first inning, a single in the second, and a hit batter in the fourth accounted for the only three base runners allowed by Person who is now 1-0 on the year.

The LSUS offense was sparked by lead off hitter Dustin Bissonette who was 4-4 on the day with a run scored and 2 runs batted in. Teammate Jeremy Chabot accounted for 3 of the Pilots 13 hits, including an RBI double in the fourth. Chabot finished 3-4 with 3 runs scored.

Four Pilot freshmen also pitched in on the offensive attack with their first hits of their college baseball careers. Freshman Troy Vaughan’s RBI fielder’s choice in the first inning put the first run of the year on the board for the Pilots. Vaughan was 1-3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored in his Pilot debut. Jeffery Ledet singled with the bases loaded in the third and drove in two Pilot runs. Brian Cooksey notched his first hit with a single in fourth, and Jordy Bias’ single in the 5th capped a strong showing for the LSUS freshman class. Bias finished the day 1-2 with two runs scored. LSUS combined for 13 runs on 13 hits and committed 3 errors in the field.

The Wildcats made some noise late in the ball game as they scored 4 runs in the top of the seventh inning off sophomore pitcher David Alexander. Two LSUS defensive miscues to allow runners on base followed by 4 singles was the only offensive production in the game for the Wildcats. LC finished with 4 runs on 5 hits and combined for 8 errors in the field.

LSUS will be in action again Saturday with a double-header versus Missouri Valley College who were ranked 38th in the NAIA Baseball preseason poles. Game time is scheduled to begin at 4:00pm. Game two will start approximately 30 minutes after the completion of game one. Game three of the series is scheduled to begin at 1:00pm Sunday.
