Payne breaks LSUS three point record in 79-67 win over Blazers

Shreveport, LA---The LSUS Pilots played host to the BelhavenCollege Blazers Thursday night. Fans at the Dock witnessed a record breaking night as Fredericko Payne led the Pilots to a 79-67 victory with 40 points, and a new LSUS record, 12 made three point attempts, breaking the old mark of 10.

Fredericko Payne connected on 7 of his first 9 three point attempts and collected 26 first half points to give the Pilots a 40-31 half time lead. The Pilots were only 13-34 from field but managed to connect on 10-25 three point attempts. Justin Collins pitched in with 8 points and 6assists.

Cedrick Crawford led the Blazers with 13 points in the half. James Bryant finished with 8. The Blazers were 11-29 from the field and connected on 3-11 from beyond the three point line.

In the second half the Pilots had built a lead as large as 20 points, but the Blazers battled back to cut the lead to as few as 5 points. With 2:00 remaining and three seconds left on the shot clock, Payne connected on his 12th three pointer from 8 feet beyond the top of the three point line to put the Pilots up 8 points and out of the Blazers reach.

Payne finished with a game high 40 points on 12-22 shooting which included an LSUS record 12-20 from beyond the three point line. Derrick Rogers pitched in with 11 second half points after being held scoreless in the first half to go along with 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Justin Collins finished with 10 points and a game high 7 assists. Pilots center and LSUS all-time leading shot blocker Derrick Hill pitched in with another outstanding defensive effort for the Pilots with 5 blocked shots and a game high 10 rebounds.

The Pilots finished the game shooting 36% from the field and connected on 15-40 from beyond the three point line. Belhaven finished shooting 40% from the field and managed to connect on just 5-22 from the three point line.

The Blazers finished with 4 scorers in double-digits with Cedrick Crawford leading the way with 14 points; Justin Pierce with 13; James Bryant had 11; and Chris Smith had 10 and a team high 7 rebounds.

LSUS is now 11-5 on the year and are on top of the GCAC at 2-0. The Pilots will be in action again Saturday night when they take on Southern University-New Orleans in New Orleans. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00pm.
