Parker claims share of RRAC POW award

WACO, Tex. - Derrick Parker of LSU Shreveport and Josh Orta of Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas) grabbed a share of the Red River Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week award for performances during the dates of Jan. 2-8.Parker, a senior forward from Minden, La., posted two double-double efforts as the Pilots won a pair of games last week. He scored 29 points and pulled down 19 rebounds in a 99-72 win over University of the Southwest (N.M.), and he reached matching totals of 16 points and 16 boards in a 69-65 squeaker over the University of St. Thomas (Texas). Parker made 18-of-35 shots from the field and 9-of-11 from the free throw line. LSUS climbed to 5-2 in the RRAC and 7-5 overall.
Orta, a junior guard from San Antonio, Texas, recorded an unconventional triple-double to lead the Saints to a 116-77 win over Texas College in their only game of the week. He finished with 18 points, 10 assists and 11 steals, falling two shy of the NAIA record for steals in a game. He connected on 7-of-14 field goal attempts and 4-of-5 free throws. Orta ranks third in the nation in total steals with 44 (3.39 per game). OLLU, ranked #23 in the NAIA, remains unbeaten in conference play at 7-0 with a 10-3 mark on the season.
