September 18, 2007
Shreveport, La.- It didn't take long for LSUS to establish their dominance at home on Tuesday afternoon versus Alcorn State. The Lady Pilots wasted no time, scoring the first goal of the game only two minutes into the contest. Senior Rachel Alexander hooked a shot into the right corner of the net for the game's first goal. Calandre Singh and Julia Vaughan were both credited with an assist on the play.
At the 7:30 mark, freshman Caitlin Smith found the back of the net from three yards out to put the Lady Pilots up 2-0. Vaughan and Singh once again assisted on the goal.
Seven minutes later, the Lady Pilots would stretch their lead to 3-0 on a beautiful shot by Vaughan. Vaughan nailed a shot from about 10 yards out into the top right corner of the net, just over the outstretched hands of Alcorn State's goalkeeper. Brenna Bussart and Michelle Williamson split two passes through the Alcorn defense, eventually finding an open Vaughan who would score on the play.
Senior Brenna Bussart took her turn putting one past the Alcorn goalkeeper at the 17:30 mark for the fourth LSUS goal of the game. Vaughan and Smith each picked up an assist on Bussart's goal.
Junior Michelle Williamson joined the scoring frenzy with her fourth goal of the season. Smith and Singh assisted on the goal, giving LSUS a 5-0 lead with 24 minutes to play in the half.
LSUS would add their sixth goal of the contest on Bussart's second goal of the game. Bussart's header into the left side of the net came off of a corner kick by Shaderia Evans. Evans' cross from the corner sailed over several Alcorn defenders before Bussart leaped high above the crowd to knock it into the back of the net.
Freshman Shelley Davenport would round out the scoring in the first half with the first goal of her LSUS career. Fellow freshman Michelle Zamani found Davenport with a pass along the right side of the field, and Davenport successfully knocked the shot past the Alcorn goalkeeper for a 7-0 LSUS lead heading into halftime.
The Lady Pilots' lone goal of the second half came off the foot of Caitlin Smith. Smith recorded her second goal of the game at the 75:00 mark, putting the finishing touch on an impressive 8-0 victory over NCAA Division 1 Alcorn State. Singh picked up her fourth assist of the contest on Smith's goal, setting an LSUS single-game record for assists.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsi McNew picked up the win in goal for the Lady Pilots, recording her fourth shutout on the season and tenth of her career.
With the win, LSUS moves to 6-3 on the year and 4-0 at "The Swamp" The Lady Pilots will be back in action on Saturday for a conference home game with The University of Mobile. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM.
