No. 21 LSUS Battles Back to Defeat William Carey

February 14, 2009

Shreveport, La. – No. 21 LSUS rallied back from a double-digit second half deficit to defeat the visiting William Carey Lady Crusaders, 69-60, on Saturday night at The Dock.

LSUS trailed 37-32 at the break and found themselves down 10 points early in the second half, but the Lady Pilots battled back and stepped it up on the defensive end to earn a big conference victory.

The win keeps LSUS one game out of first place in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference standings and puts them one step closer to hosting a GCAC Tournament game for the first time in the program’s history.

Point guard Valerie Huizar led the Lady Pilots with 21 points and 6 assists, while making 4-of-10 three-point attempts on the night.  Post players Janai Sells and Quan Joseph also finished in double figures with 13 and 12 points respectively, while Whitney Hollins added 10.

The big difference in the game was an LSUS defense that forced 17 turnovers compared to just 10 for the Lady Pilots.

LSUS also connected on 20-of-25 free throws in the game, while William Carey was just 6-for-10.

The Lady Pilots (21-4, 11-3) travel to Mobile on Thursday for two weekend games versus Spring Hill and the University of Mobile.
