No. 15 LSUS Sweeps No. 9 Mobile
January 24, 2009
MOBILE, Ala—The visiting 15th-ranked LSUS baseball team picked up a three-game series sweet over the 9th-ranked Mobile Rams, as the Pilots rallied for an 8-3 victory Saturday.
Through the first four innings it looked like the Rams would bounce back from two lopsided defeats on Friday, as Spence McDonald allowed only 1 hit and 1 walk through 4 innings, as the Rams took a 2-1 lead when Jared Baria roped a RBI-double in the 1st and Matt Sparks blasted a solo homer in the 4th.
However, the Pilots' bats came to life in the 5th and 6th innings with a pair of 3-run innings. After Quinton Shamsabady tied the game with a RBI double in the 5th, a pair of hit-batsmen and a wild pitch led to two more LSUS runs to put the Pilots on top for good 4-2.
In the 6th inning, Chase Wentz continued the bottom-of-the-order dominance with a 3-run jack to put the game out of reach. Although the Mobile pitchers held the top six hitters in the LSUS lineup to 0 hits on the afternoon, the No. 7, 8 and 9 hitters combined to go 6-for-10 at the plate with 6 runs scored and 5 RBI. Jeffrey Garidel led the way for LSUS with a 4-for-4 afternoon.
Scott Petroski (1-0) picked up the win for the Pilots in his LSUS debut by scattering 7 hits over 6 innings of work and allowing 3 runs. McDonald (0-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing 5 runs on 3 hits in 5 innings of work.
LSUS (3-0, 3-0) will open up their home schedule next Friday when they face LSU-Alexandria at 6:30 p.m. at Pilot Field.
