Mortensen strikes Rams

SHREVEPORT, La. - The no. 9 LSU Shreveport Pilots baseball team eliminated the Texas Wesleyan Rams from the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament with an 11-0 win. LSUS starter Jared Mortensen dominated the Rams with 13 strike outs.LSUS (40-13) broke the game's scoreless tie in the fourth inning with three runs thanks to RBI-singles from Michael Diffie and Shawn Moy as the Pilots executed perfectly the hit and run to take charge of the game 3-0 after four complete innings of play.
The Pilots struck for three more runs in the fifth as Kyle Pearson came through with a two-run triple to give the Pilots a 6-0 lead. The home team tacked on five runs in the sixth to bust the game wide open as Kevin Smith blast a grand slam which was his 14th homer of the year and Pearson later followed with his third home run of the RRAC Tournament giving him eight on the year. LSUS led 11-0 after the sixth inning.
Mortensen (8-1) blew away the Rams with 13 strikeouts in eight innings pitched while only walking one batter. Cade Bowen pitched the ninth striking out two batters to combine for the shutout. Drew Cavender (1-1) suffered the loss for the Rams as he allowed five earned runs in five innings of work.
LSUS had four batters get multi-hits: Smith was two for four with four RBIs, Pearson was two for three with three RBIs, Justin Brodnax was two for four with two RBIs, and Shawn Moy was two for four with a RBI.
The Pilots put an end to the Texas Wesleyan tournament title hope as LSUS advances in the winner's bracket to face the winner of the UT-Brownsville and Northwood game at 11:30 a.m. Monday morning.
