Samuel Portales begins his second season as the Student-Assistant Coach for the LSU Shreveport Soccer program and will assist Coach Aguilar with coordinating practices and field maintenance.

Portales is a native of Melchor Muzquiz, Coahuila, Mexico. He grew up in Athens, Texas, and began playing soccer when he was 14 years old as he began his career for Athens High School where his team made the playoffs in each of his four seasons.

After graduation Portales attended Lon Morris College where he played for two seasons and received is Associates of Arts Degree in 2009.

Portales played two seasons (2009 & 2010) for the LSU Shreveport Pilots and was selected to the Red River Athletic Conference First-Team All-Conference and was also selected as the Defensive Player of the Year for the 2010 season.

In addition to being on the first LSUS Men's Soccer team, Portales played in 28 games in his career dawning the navy and gold uniform as he scored four goals from the back line of the Pilots defense. He scored three of those goals in his senior year.

Portales is currently majoring in Community Health with the hopes of one day coaching at the professional level. He is the son of Juan Antonio and Faustina Portales. He has two brothers and one sister: Esau Portales, Tony Portales and Eunice Portales.
