Men's Soccer: Pontes earns RRAC Player of the Week

WACO, Tex. - Leonardo Medeiros of the University of Texas-Brownsville and Rodrigo Pontes of LSU Shreveport earned a share of the Red River Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week award for Oct. 8-14, and Ross DeWet of Texas Wesleyan University was selected as the RRAC Defensive Player of the Week for the same dates.

Medeiros, a junior forward from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, exploded for five goals and an assist in a 12-1 victory over Southwestern Assemblies of God University (Texas) as the Scorpions won a pair of RRAC contests last week. UTB moved to 7-1 in conference play and 8-3-3 on the season.

Pontes, a senior forward from Sao Paulo, Brazil, notched four goals and an assist in two wins for the Pilots last week. He netted the only goal in a 1-0 win over Texas College then scored a hat trick and added an assist in a 5-1 defeat of Bacone College (Okla.). LSUS is now 5-2-1 in the RRAC and 9-4-1 overall.

DeWet, a junior defender from Johannesburg, South Africa, paced the Ram defense that posted a pair of 4-0 shutouts last week. TWU blanked both Wiley College (Texas) and the University of St. Thomas (Texas) to climb to 6-1-1 and 7-4-2.

Marin Jonjic of TWU, Gerardo Marquez of Our Lady of the Lake University (Texas) and Jorge Orona of University of the Southwest (N.M.) were nominated for this week's offensive award, while Luis Flores of OLLU, Jose Galvan of UTB, Angel Hernandez of USW, and Lance Quini of LSUS were defensive nominees.
