Men's Basketball: no. 2 Pilots drop season opener
November 01, 2013
HUMBLE, Tex. - The night did not go so well for the no. 2 LSU Shreveport Pilots as they struggled to find their rhythm in route to a 107-93 loss to good but unranked St. Gregory's University squad. The Pilots will not have much time to ponder on the loss as they get right back in action tomorrow night (Saturday) at The Dock as they take on the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma Drovers at 7:30 p.m.
The Pilots (0-1) had four scorers to reach double figures during Friday's opener with starter Will Nelson netting 23 points along with Dundrecous Nelson's 23 off the bench. Brandon Davis collected his usual double-double with 22 points and 17 rebounds to lead all rebounders. Will Nelson collected his first double-double in the LSUS uniform pulling down 11 rebounds to add to his 23 points.
The turnover battle did not play much of a factor as the Pilots turned the ball over 17 times in the contest while forcing their opponents in 19 miscues. Tevin Hall led the Pilots' defense with four steals while Davis and D. Nelson both had three takeaways. Hall also led Pilots with six assists.
St. Gregory's Tilford Thornton had the game high of 29 points while Marty Wilkerson drained 21 points to help his team past the Pilots. They had three other scorers reach double figures but had no player finish with a double-double.
These two teams will meet again on November 16th at The Dock at 3 p.m. sandwiched between a pair of women's games as the Lady Pilots host the LSU Shreveport Classic. The Lady Pilots will follow the Pilots that day at 5 p.m. against Xavier University.
The next game for the Pilots will be tomorrow night (11-2-13) at The Dock against USAO at 7:30 p.m. The Pilots will follow the Shreveport-Bossier Mavericks and Dallas Diesel exhibition game that begins at 5 p.m. at The Dock. Fans can purchase a ticket for the low price of $10 to watch both the Mavericks and then the Pilots' games.
