McCaulley's homer lifts Loyola over LSU-Shreveport 5-3

Westwego, La. – Bryan McCaulley hit a two run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to break a 3-3 tied to give Loyola a 5-3 victory Sunday afternoon at Segnette Field.

Loyola trailed 3-0 into the bottom of the seventh inning before rallying for five runs in their last two frames.

In the seventh, Andy Rodriguez and Trey Fury hit consecutive singles to open the inning for the Wolfpack. Pinch hitter Todd Hubbell doubled to left center scoring Rodriguez and Fury to cut the lead to 3-2. David Kathmann pinch ran for Hubbell and advanced to third on Bobby Alvarez’s fielder’s choice. Kathmann scored on Brian Mason’s sacrifice fly to left center to tie the score.

Loyola reliever Sal Greco entered in the top of the eighth and retired the Pilots in order, including striking out Colin Moro to end the frame.

Tyler Lewis entered in the Loyola eighth and was greeted by a single by David Lauricella to bring McCaulley to the plate. The senior right fielder deposited Lewis’s first pitch over the wall in left center to give Loyola the 5-3 lead.

Greco stranded two runners in the top half of the ninth, getting Pilot leadoff hitter Dustin Bissonnette to fly to left field to end the game.

Greco (1-0) got the win for the Wolfpack (8-9, 1-5 GCAC).

He threw two scoreless innings and gave up two hits and struck out three. Starter Chucky Benach threw six innings.

He surrendered one run on five hits and struck out three.

Lauricella, McCaulley, and Fury each had two hits for the Wolfpack.

Jeff Ledet led the Pilots (8-5, 3-2 GCAC) going 3 for 4.

Lewis (0-2) was tagged with the loss. He gave up two run on two hits and struck out two in one inning of work. Starter Matt Clayman went seven innings and gave up three runs on seven hits and struck out four.
