Marshall's Hat-Trick Lifts LSUS Past Alcorn

September 08, 2008

Shreveport, La. – LSUS junior Alicia Marshall tallied three goals and an assist to lead the Lady Pilots to an easy 8-0 victory over Alcorn State on Monday afternoon at The Swamp.

LSUS opened up the game’s scoring at the 8:00 mark on a header by Michelle Talley.  Talley knocked in the goal off a corner kick by Caitlin Smith, giving the Lady Pilots an early 1-0 lead.

Marshall scored her first of three goals on the day when she rebounded and put back a missed shot by Smith 25 minutes into the contest.

One minute before halftime, LSUS freshman Rachael Knight became the first of three Lady Pilots to record their first career goal in the game, as she drilled a shot into the top corner, giving LSUS a 3-0 lead heading into the break.  Fellow freshman Kimberly Phelps picked up an assist on the goal.

The Lady Pilots offense came out on fire in the second half, scoring five goals in the final 45 minutes.  Freshmen Dorrie Vaughan and Heather Lofties each recorded their first collegiate goal, while Marshall added two goals of her own for the hat-trick.  Sophomore Michelle Zamani tallied the game’s final goal at the 77 minute mark, as she weaved in-and-out of the Alcorn defense for an uncontested goal.

Freshman Amber Salvucci picked up the win in goal for the Lady Pilots, while recording three saves in the victory.  The Lady Pilots defense limited the Lady Braves to just three shots on the afternoon, as the home team out shot the visitors, 30-3.

LSUS (3-2) will be back in action on Friday afternoon when they travel to Baton Rouge to face the Southern University Lady Jaguars.
