LSUS Shuts Out Loyola in Lopsided Win

February 27, 2009

SHREVEPORT, La. – No. 10 LSUS made easy work of the first game in a three-game series versus the Loyola Wolfpack, as the Pilots cruised to a 19-0 victory on Friday night.

J.V. Laffitte was exceptional on the mound in his first start since the 2006 season, allowing just two hits and striking out seven batters.  Laffitte, who sat out the majority of the 2007 and 2008 seasons following Tommy John’s surgery, has yet to allow a run in 12.1 innings pitched this season.

Laffitte was aided by an LSUS offense that scored 19 runs on 13 hits, including four home runs in the contest.  Two big innings by the Pilots resulted in 15 runs as LSUS scored five in the first and ten in the fifth.

Jeffrey Garidel and Andrew Brouillette each homered and drove in four runs to lead the Pilots, while Chase Wentz and David Bradley also homered in the contest.  Brouillette put the Pilots up 3-0 with his long ball in the first and Garidel hit a grand slam in the ten-run fifth.  Wentz and Bradley each hit solo shots in the third and fifth respectively.

Brouillette finished the night 2-for-2 with two walks, and Andrew Blubaugh added two doubles and an RBI in the win.  Matt Lawrence entered the game in the fifth and finished 1-for-2 with 3 RBIs.

With the win LSUS improves to 17-3 on the season and 12-2 in GCAC play.  The Wolfpack are now 3-15 on the year with a 3-10 conference record.

The two teams will square off again tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 P.M.  John James is scheduled to throw in the first game for the Pilots with Gino Spratley wrapping up the series on the mound in game three.
