LSUS MEN'S SOCCER OPEN SEASON WITH WIN

August 23, 2009

The LSUS men’s soccer team opened the 2009 preseason with a 2-1 win against Lon Morris College on Sunday afternoon in Jacksonville, Texas.

The first goal of the game was scored by the Pilots’ junior forward, William Awagu (Shreveport, Louisiana) at 16:30 into the first half. Awagu’s initial shot banged off the post and as the LMC keeper dove for the save, Awagu followed his shot and put the Pilots on the board.

LSUS finished the first half with a 1-0 lead and had six shots on goal. The Pilot’s junior goal keeper, Rogerio Celaya (Conroe, Texas) saved all five shots he saw in the first half.

The Pilots only needed one shot in the second half to finish the game. Freshman midfielder, Zach Kelly (Shreveport, Louisiana), passed the ball to Awagu who scored his second goal of the game that proved to be the game winner at 7:07 into the second half.

Rogerio Celaya played all 90 minutes in goal for the Pilots and had seven saves, with the only Lon Morris goal coming with 16 seconds to go in the game.

Head Coach, Jed Jones, was pleased with today’s performance, “I thought we played well. This game will give some confidence to our guys getting a win to start the preseason.  Awagu did a great job to keep pressure on them all day long.”

The Pilots next game will start the regular season on the road next Saturday, August 29, in Oklahoma City against Mid America Christian at 3 p.m.
