LSUS cruises past Crusaders with 93-87 victory
January 31, 2004The William Carey College Crusaders traveled to LSUS Saturday night to take on the LSUS Pilots in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference (GCAC) action. The Pilots (10-10, 3-5) looked to pull within a game of the Crusaders (11-11, 5-3) in the GCAC standings. And they did just that with an impressive 93-87 win over the Crusaders.
In the first half, the Crusaders shot 56% from the field on 19-34 shooting; 12-19 from beyond the three-point line. Jason Marovich finished the half with 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. Derrick Rogers finished the first half a 15 points and 5 rebounds, both half time highs for the Pilots. Heading into the locker room at the break, the score was 50-40 in favor of the Crusaders.
LSUS came out of the locker room on fire as they converted on their first five possessions and began the second half on a 12-0 run, erasing the first half deficit of 10 points in the first 3 minutes of period 2. Jason Marovich continued his potent offense attack, finishing with a game high 28 points, to go along with 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. The LSUS Pilots however had the answer however as 4 Pilots reached double digit point totals on the night. Rico Payne poured in 26 points on 10 of 22 shooting, and also had 8 assists and 5 rebounds. Derrick Rogers continued his consistent play with a 24 point performance to go along with 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Derrick Sowell ended with 12 points and 9 rebounds, followed by Justin Collins who had 10 points and 7 assists.
LSUS finished the game shooting 46% from the field and cashed in on 17 of 22 free throw attempts. The Pilots will be in action again on February 2nd when they will travel to Jackson, MS to take on Tougaloo College, and will be home once again on February 7th looking to avenge a recent loss to the Mobile University Rams.
