February 12, 2009
Shreveport, La. - The Loyola Wolfpack overtook the LSUS Lady Pilots in the race for first place in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference with a 69-52 victory on Thursday night at The Dock.
Loyola guard Trenese Smith torched the nets for a game-high 32 points in the win, including a 6-for-9 performance from behind the three-point line.
The No. 21 Lady Pilots looked as if they were going to run away with the game early, scoring the game's first 10 points before Loyola even made a basket. However, the Wolfpack finished the first half outscoring the Lady Pilots 27-11 to lead by six at the break.
Loyola began the second half on a 9-3 run to stretch their lead out to as many as 12, and the Lady Pilots would get no closer than six the rest of the way.
For the second straight contest, LSUS stuggled shooting the basketball especially from the three-point line. The Lady Pilots finished just 3-for-13 from behind the arc, while Loyola nailed 50% (8-for-16) of their three-point attemps.
Janai Sells scored a team-high 22 points for the Lady Pilots. Sells also finished with a double-double by adding 11 rebounds.
LSUS (20-4, 10-3) has lost two consecutive games for the first time this season and will look to snap their losing streak on Saturday night versus William Carey.
