Lady 'Saders escape with double overtime victory over Lady Pilots

Hattiesburg, MS---Saturday afternoon was homecoming for the campus of William Carey College who played host to the LSUS Pilots and Lady Pilots in front of a boisterous crowd of 750 basketball fans. Game one saw the Lady ‘Saders Leironica Evans tie the score at 53-53 with :30 seconds remaining after connecting on a three point attempt which resulted in two overtime periods. The Lady Pilots connected on just 4-of-11 free throw attempts in overtime which resulted in a disappointing 60-59 defeat.
LSUS led 27-20 at the break after holding the Lady ‘Saders to just 8-of-29 (27%) from the field.
The Lady Pilots led the entire second half and built a lead as large as 50-42 with 5:57 remaining. LSUS however saw that lead evaporate down the stretch after scoring just three points in the final six minutes allowing WCC to mount an 11-3 run to tie the game at 53-53 with 30 seconds remaining and send the game to overtime.
The two teams managed to post just four combined points in the first overtime session which finished knotted up at 55-55.
The Lady Pilots led 59-58 in the final minute of the second overtime session before a costly turnover led to the game winning lay-up by Sharon Pendarvis with :54 seconds remaining. LSUS had three possessions in the final minute but could not find a way to score to steal a much needed road victory.
Evans led the Lady “Saders offense with 13 points and added four assists. WCC shot a combined 32% from the floor and out rebounded the Lady Pilots by a 48-43 margin
Kacie Cryer led the Lady Pilots with 16 points and was the lone bright spot from the free throw line finishing a perfect 6-of-6. Jessica Kelly finished with 13 points while teammate Edie Leonards flirted with her second double-double in as many games but finished with nine points and a team high nine rebounds.
The Lady Pilots (6-9, 2-4) will not have long to recover as they will jump right back into Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action Monday night when they play host to the Tougaloo College Lady Bulldogs (5-10, 1-5). Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30pm at The Dock.
