Lady Pilots Win in Comeback Thriller

January 11, 2008

Shreveport, La. - The LSUS Lady Pilots netted their second consecutive conference victory on Thursday night at The Dock, defeating Belhaven College, 52-51.

Junior Jamien Arvie's tip-in with just under one minute remaining in the game, capped off a huge comeback and gave the Lady Pilots their first lead since the 19-minute mark of the first half.

LSUS led Belhaven, 4-2, early in the contest before the Lady Blazers went on a 28-10 run over the next 13 minutes to take a 30-14 lead with six minutes left to play in the first half.

However, the Lady Pilots ended the first half on a run of their own.  Trailing by as many as 16 points, LSUS responded with a late 9-0 run, capped off by a Teokea Wilkerson three-point basket, to cut the Belhaven lead down to single digits at the half.

Down by a score of 30-23 at the break, the Lady Pilots opened up the second half with an 8-3 run to tie the game at 33 with 15:50 left in the game.

The Lady Pilots would find themselves down again late in the second half, as Belhaven pushed their lead back to six points with five minutes remaining in the contest.

Down by six points, the Lady Pilots responded with a late 8-2 run, tying the game at 49 on a layup by Edie Leonards with just under three minutes remaining.

A Belhaven basket by Samantha Kirkwood put the Lady Blazers in front by two with two minutes left in the contest.

After a Lady Pilots missed attempt to tie the game, Arvie came up with a huge steal on the defensive end.  Arvie was then fouled and sent to the free-throw line, where she cut the Belhaven lead to one after making just one of two free-throws.

Another defensive stop by the Lady Pilots gave them the ball back with just over one minute left to play and trailing by one.

Arvie's put-back off of a missed jumper by Janai Sells with one minute remaining gave the Lady Pilots a 52-51 lead.

The Lady Pilots needed two clutch defensive stops, including Edie Leonards' steal with .5 seconds left on the clock, to secure the victory.

Leonards led the Pilots with 14 points and 11 rebounds, while Sells chipped in with 8 points.  Arvie finished with 7 points and 7 rebounds.

The Lady Pilots will host Dillard on Saturday at 2:00 PM at The Dock.
