October 26, 2007
Shreveport, La. - The LSUS Lady Pilots season will continue tomorrow night, as they advanced to the GCAC Tournament Championship after defeating Spring Hill College 2-1 on penalty kicks Friday afternoon.
Freshman and Second Team All-GCAC performer Caitlin Smith provided the Lady Pilots with their first and only goal in regulation, as both teams battled to a 1-1 tie through the first 90 minutes of action. Senior Rachel Alexander was credited with her fifth assist of the season on Smith's goal.
After two scoreless overtime periods, the Lady Pilots outscored the Lady Pilots 4-2 on penalty kicks to seal the victory. Julia Vaughan, Rachel Alexander, Michelle Williamson and Smith were all successful on their penalty kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kelsi McNew picked up the win in goal for the Lady Pilots, as she came up huge in the clutch, saving 3 of 5 Spring Hill penalty kicks.
"Our University and the entire Shreveport/Bossier community should be extremely proud of the way these girls played this afternoon," commented head coach Jed Jones. "They fought hard for over 110 minutes, and were victorious because they had the heart of champions today."
With the win, the Lady Pilots move into tomorrow night's GCAC Tournament Championship, and will face the winner of tonight's other semifinal match-up between William Carey and Mobile.
Tomorrow's kickoff is set for 5:30 at William Carey College in Hattiesburg, Miss.
