Lady Pilots Tie School Record With 13th Win

January 16, 2009

HATTIESBURG, Miss.- The No. 22 LSUS Lady Pilots used a late 14 to 5 run to defeat the William Carey Lady Crusaders 67-58, tying a single-season school record with their 13th win of the season.

William Carey controlled things early, as the Lady Pilots found themselves down 22-17 with 6:49 left to play in the first half following Alisha Mason's third three pointer of the half.  However, the Lady Pilots answered Carey's three-point barrage with one of their own, connecting on three three-point baskets that capped off a 19-7 run to end the half.

With LSUS leading 36-29 at the break, Carey slowly chipped at the LSUS lead and Fallon Hartfield's bucket with 6:18 to play evened the score at 53.  But, the Lady Pilots responded with a Callie Davis three pointer and a left-handed runner by Tish Flowers as the shot clock expired, giving them a lead their defense would not relinquish on this night.

LSUS held the Lady Crusaders to just two field goals and one free throw over the final six minutes, as they pulled away for a nine-point win.

Valerie Huizar led the Lady Pilots with 19 points, while Whitney Hollins added 15 and Flowers 11.

Fallon Hartfield led the Lady Crusaders with a game high 21 points and 10 rebounds, but a stingy LSUS defense held Carey's second-leading scorer to zero points on the night.

LSUS will be back at The Dock on Saturday night versus Belhaven College.  Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 P.M.
