Lady Pilots Thrive in Overtime

December 03, 2011
SHREVEPORT, La. - The LSU Shreveport Lady Pilots remain unbeaten in Red River Athletic Conference play after their 83-78 overtime win over the Texas Wesleyan Lady Rams on Saturday night at the Dock. The Lady Pilots overcame two double-digit deficits in the first and second half and then controlled the game in overtime.

LSUS (5-2, 3-0 RRAC) had a couple of timely three-pointers in the overtime period as Christy Willis made the first in their first possession to give the Lady Pilots a three-point lead. With two minutes to play Jennifer Hick stepped up to the arc and drained the shot to put her team in front yet again by one but the Lady Rams would counter with a two-point jumper to regain the lead.

Sharde Henry came up big for the Lady Pilots as she collected two points in the paint with 1:22 to play to put her squad back on top by one and later with 37 seconds to play collected a rebound that would draw a foul and send her to the line with 23 seconds to go. She made both to put LSUS ahead by three as the Lady Rams missed a three on the ensuing possession.

The Lady Pilots trailed by 11 with 9:16 to play in the first half but mounted a comeback to take the lead by one at the half. LSUS dug themselves another 11-point hole in the second half which only dwindled down to 10 with fewer than five minutes to play.

TWU (5-2, 2-1 RRAC) struggled shooting the ball in the first half but made some key three-pointers to keep them close on the scoreboard as they shot the ball better in the second half to finish the contest at 44% from the field while the Lady Pilots made 50% of theirs from the field.

Although the Lady Pilots did not have any double-digit rebounders they did have four shooters in double figures. Henry led all scorers with 20 points on the evening after going eight for nine from the field and a perfect four of four from the charity stripe. She also found time to help her teammates as well as she led the Lady Pilots with eight assists and had three takeaways on defense.

Hicks used a couple of key three-pointers to boost her point total to 19 by the game's end while Jenna Diakos finished with 14 points. Willis made three from downtown and finished with 13 points.

TWU had three scorers in double figures: Nicole Terral (19), Kristi Alexander (18), and Kayla McCray (16).

The next game for the Lady Pilots will be at the Dock on Monday, December 12th, at 5:30 p.m. against the Bacone Lady Warriors.
