Lady Pilots take opening game in SAGU Pepsi Classic 66-36 over Dallas

November 18, 2005

Waxahachie, TX---The LSUS Lady Pilots looked to regroup from their first loss of the season Monday night versus Centenary College- and they did so in a big way. The Lady Pilots used 20 points from the hot hand of Moche Roque to take the opening game of the Southwestern Assemblies of God University Classic, 66-36 over the Dallas Christian College Lady Crusaders.

The Lady Pilots built a 30-22 halftime lead after connecting on 13-30 from the field while holding the Lady Crusaders to just 7-26 (27%).

LSUS ran away with this one in holding the Lady Crusaders to just 14 second half points. The Lady Pilots used a game high 20 points from Roque and 17 points and six rebounds from leading scorer Jessica Kelley to defeat the Lady Crusaders 66-36 to improve to 3-1 on the season.

“We played much better in the second half. We did a good job of pressuring the ball which led to good scoring opportunities. I thought we played much harder on defense which led to more turnovers and less fouls,” commented Lady Pilots Head Coach Ronnie Howell.

LSUS connected on 14-34 (41%) from the floor which included 8-11 from the free-throw line. Britteney Walker provided a huge boost off the bench for the Lady Pilots collecting 10 points and three rebounds while teammate Marcia Spyhalski pitched in with five points and a game high nine rebounds.

Lindsay Bradford collected a team high 11 points and eight rebounds but was also charged with 11 of the 33 turnovers committed by the Lady Crusaders. Teammate Brandy Gratten pitched in with seven points and three rebounds.

“Our guards have done a good job of controlling the tempo of the game and taking what the game gives them. Our post players are playing hard but still are not finishing the way we think they can. Tomorrow’s game versus Hillsdale will be a good test for our girls that we are all looking forward to,” concluded Howell.

At 3-1 on the year, the Lady Pilots are off to the best start in the school’s history and will have a chance to improve upon that record tomorrow afternoon when they will square off against Hillsdale College Lady Saints in their final game at the SAGU Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00pm.
