Lady Pilots roll past Our Lady of the Lake

January 30, 2012
SHREVEPORT, La. - The LSU Shreveport Lady Pilots women's basketball team defeated the Our Lady of the Lake University Saints 85-71 on Monday night at The Dock to remain in first place in the RRAC regular season standings as they claimed their tenth straight victory.

LSUS (16-5, 14-1 RRAC) are becoming a second half team as the season goes along as they trailed by eight points at the break but shot the ball well at 45% in the first half.

In the second half things turned around as the visiting coach was charged with a technical foul with 10:36 to play. Sharde Henry made both technical free-throws that began a 13-6 run that charged the Lady Pilots to the lead.

Victoria Smith made a pair of free-throws to give the Lady Pilots the lead for the first time in the second half and only the second time in the game since they led 3-0 after Christy Willis nailed a three-pointer on the opening possession of the game. On the Lady Pilots ensuing possession, Willis knocked one down from beyond the arc to stretch the lead to five with 7:35 to play.

The Lady Pilots put together another run later outscoring the visitors 8-2 with three minutes to play and had a seven-point lead. LSUS won by 14 but it could have been a lot worse as they shot just 66% from the free-throw line making 17 out of 27 attempts but they outrebounded their opponents to offset some of the misses 48-44.

LSUS dominated the paint scoring 34 points there as Sharde Henry led all scorers with 26 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. Jenna Diakos accomplished the same feet with 14 points and 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season while Christy Willis had 13 points and Victoria Smith had 11 off the bench.

Our Lady of the Lake (16-5, 11-4 RRAC) helped keep the game within striking distance with 22 offensive rebounds and only shooting 35% from the field. Chelsea Solis had 13 points while Nikkia Davis had 12 and Treshenia Solomon 11. Solomon was the only double-digit rebounder for the Saints with 10.

The next game for the Lady Pilots will be the first of a four-game road trip as they go to Dallas to take on Paul Quinn College at 5:00 on Thursday, February 2. The next home game at The Dock will be Wednesday, February 15th, at 5:00 p.m. against St. Thomas.
