Lady Pilots roll over Rams, 55-54

The LSUS Lady Pilots (7-14, 3-8)defeated the University of Mobile Lady Rams 55-54 Saturday night in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action. At the midpoint of the 2003-2004 season, the Lady Pilots entered the contest tied for 9th place in the conference with Tougaloo College, while Mobile entered the contest in 3rd place with a 7-4 conference record.

In a low scoring first half, the two teams found themselves knotted at a 26-26 half time score. The lady Pilots finished the half shooting 11-29 from the field, 4-10 from the three-point line. The Lady Rams were 8-25 in the first, 2-7 from behind the line. Renalda Stafford led the scoring for the Lady Pilots with 8 points, 4 assists, and 6 turnovers. Kinga Rybarczyk led the Rams with 8 points and 6 rebounds.

The Lady Pilots managed to hold off the Lady Rams in the second half and pulled out a 55-54 victory. Free-throws down the stretch kept the Lady Pilots out of reach. Dyamond Hogg connected on 2 free throw attempts with 9 seconds left to give the Lady Pilots a 55-51 lead. The Lady Rams Jessica Barber made a crucial three from well beyond the arc to cut the Pilot lead to one. On the pursuing in bound play, the Lady Pilots managed to inbound the ball and avoid being fouled and ran out the clock to preserve their 3rd conference win of the season.

Renalda Stafford led all scorers with 19 points on 8 of 11 shooting, and also finished with 4 assists. The Lady Pilots finished the game shooting 23 of 47, 5 of 13 the three-point line, and 4 of 10 from the free-throw line. Kinga Rybarczyk finished with 9 points and 9 rebounds for the Lady Rams. Trevor Chandler was the Rams leading scorer with 14.

LSUS improved their season record to 7-14 on the season, 3-8 in GCAC play. The lady Pilots are in action again at LSUS Monday night when they will take on Belhaven College of Jackson, MS. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30.
