Lady Pilots Ranked Nationally for First Time in Program History

January 12, 2009

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The LSUS Lady Pilots achieved their first-ever national ranking on Monday, entering the NAIA Division 1 Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 poll at No. 22.

LSUS is off to the best start in the program's short history, winning 12 out of their first 13 games, including a current school-record ten game winning streak.

"Although it is still early in the season and rankings don't mean very much right now, this is a special day for the LSUS women's basketball program," said Head Coach Ronnie Howell. "Our girls have worked real hard this season, and they are very deserving of this ranking."

Union (Tenn.) received all 11 first place votes to remain No. 1 in the poll, earning 281 total points.

Vanguard (Calif.) moved back to No. 2 after winning both games last week.  The Lions received 269 total points.  No. 3 Oklahoma City and No. 4 Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) both dropped a spot after going 1-1 last week.  OCU earned 264 points while Trevecca Nazarene received 255 points.  Lee (Tenn.) moved up a spot from last week to No. 5 with 241 points while Freed-Hardeman (Tenn.) climbed two spots to No. 6 with 229 points.

Lubbock Christian (Texas) knocked off then-No. 2 Oklahoma City on Monday but fell to then-No. 19 Southern Nazarene (Okla.) on Thursday and dropped a spot in the poll to No. 7.  The Lady Chaps compiled 222 total points.

No. 8 Lambuth (Tenn.) (220 points) moved up two spots after winnings against Trevecca Nazarene last week.  Saint Xavier (Ill.) held its spot at No. 9 with 215 points.

Westmont (Calif.) knocked off two top-25 teams last week and moved into the top-10.  The Warriors moved up five spots from last week and earned 197 points.

No. 18 Biola (Calif.), No. 21 Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.), No. 22 LSUS and No. 23 Martin Methodist (Tenn.) all moved into the top-25 this week.

The fifth regular season poll will be released on Monday, January 19.
