Lady Pilots Rack Up All-Conference Honors
March 02, 2009
Shreveport, La. - LSUS' Valerie Huizar, Whitney Hollins and Janai Sells were all selected to the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference team and Head Coach Ronnie Howell was picked as the Coach of the Year, announced today (Mar. 2) by the league's office.
Huizar, a 5'9 point guard from San Antonio, was also honored as the Newcomer of the Year after helping the Lady Pilots to a record-breaking year in her first season at LSUS. She led the team in scoring at 12.5 PPG, while also leading the conference with a single-season school record 157 assists (5.4 APG).
Hollins did not disappoint in her sophomore campaigns after having one of the most successful freshman seasons in LSUS history last year. For the second straight season, she led the Lady Pilots in three-point field goals made (82) and percentage (.394), while finishing second on the team in scoring at 12.3 PPG. Hollins also broke two school records this season from behind the arc, as she currently holds the LSUS record for most three-pointers made in a game (8) and career (134).
Sells is the only senior to make the All-Conference team, as she finished the season averaging 10.7 points and a team-high 7.3 rebounds in her fourth and final season as a Lady Pilot. For her career, Sells is the LSUS all-time career leader in rebounds with 570. Despite missing nearly half the season with a stress fracture in her foot, Sells proved to be a dominating force in the paint for the Lady Pilots over the last half of the season.
After winning 13 games in each of the previous four seasons, Lady Pilots' Head Coach Ronnie Howell was honored as the GCAC Coach of the Year after leading his team to a school-record 25 wins during the regular season and a second-place finish in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference standings.
Howell and his Lady Pilots will host a first-round GCAC Tournament game for the first time in school history on Wednesday night at 7:00 P.M. when they take on the winner of Monday's play-in game between SUNO and Spring Hill.
