Lady Pilots pull away from Mustangs

HOBBS, N.M. - Jenna Diakos dominated the court on Saturday night making 11 of 16 attempts from the field to lead all scorers with 26 points as the Lady Pilots defeated the Southwest Lady Mustangs in Red River Athletic Conference play 92-79 in a shootout.LSUS (19-6, 17-2 RRAC) were only able to build a nine-point lead in the first half that was dwindled down to just four by the break. The Lady Pilots shot 51% from the field in the first half while making three of six from beyond the arc while the Lady Mustangs (7-19, 2-18 RRAC) tried to keep pace with the visitors converting on five of 17 attempts from downtown as they finished at 43% from the field to keep the game within striking distance.
The Lady Pilots came out with a purpose in the second half and built a comfortable 21-point lead following a Brittany Maddox three-point bucket with 8:39 to play in the game. Southwest tried their best to get back into the contest with 24 attempts from beyond the arc in the second half making only six while the Lady Pilots continued to convert from the field making 52%.
In addition to Diakos, the Lady Pilots finished with two other scorers in double figures with Christy Willis having a 16-point 13-rebound double-double performance while Meoshi Bradley tossed in a dozen points. Jennifer Hicks just missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds while Victoria Smith did have a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Sharde Henry added eight points. Willis was six of eight from the field including three of four from downtown.
Southwest had only one player on the floor that did not attempt a three-pointer as they finished with four scorers in double figures. Simone Buckhanan led the team with 20 points while Johnnelle Kapua had 15 points, Melody Borjas 14 and Tarah Turner 11.
The next game for the Lady Pilots will be on Wednesday night, Feb. 15, against St. Thomas at 5 p.m. as LSUS celebrates homecoming.
