September 27, 2012
SHREVEPORT, La. - The LSU Shreveport women's soccer team had no trouble taking advantage of the outnumbered Wiley College Lady Wildcats on Thursday afternoon at The Swamp with a final score of 10-0.
The Lady Wildcats (0-6, 0-3 RRAC) are in their first-ever season are having troubles putting the maximum number of player on the field on game day. Today at The Swamp they began the match fielding 10 of the 11 starting positions and by the time the final buzzer sounded they had two less than when they started due to injuries that occurred during the match.
Among the in their injured was keeper Natasha Celedon who surrendered six goals in 60 minutes while the back-up allowed four goals in the game's final 29 minutes.
The Lady Pilots (6-3, 3-0 RRAC) eased past their RRAC opponent having three players score a pair of goals. Starters Brooke Martin (5th & 6th of the season) and Jessica Carrion (1st and 2nd of the season) netted a pair while Kacie De La Fuente scored two off the bench for the home squad. LSUS had four other scorers that each netted one goal apiece.
Warfield's goal was her third of the season while three defenders found their way up field to score as well. Jaynie Stewart and team captain's Kelly Boss and Megan Hussey all found the back of the net for the first time this season.
The only thing that would have provided icing on the cake would have been if starting keeper Shay Wells had scored a goal but the final six minutes was not enough time for her to shake the net on the other end of the field. After 84 minutes in the net with no action Head Coach Mike Aguilar inserted Wells in at forward as her teammates kept trying to get her the ball but to no avail.
LSUS scored six times in the first half of play with Mary Warfield breaking the scoreless game during the 20th minute. The team's offensive leader Brooke Martin scored back-to-back goals to give the Lady Pilots a 3-0 advantage by the 33rd minute as Jaynie Stewart was credited with the assist on Martin's second goal.
Nearly two minutes later Stewart found the back of the net to be followed a minute later by a goal from Kacie De La Fuente and then Jessica Carrion with Nea Sunila assisting on the final two goals of the first half.
The Lady Pilots will have to wait another week until their next contest as it will be a long trip to Hobbs, New Mexico, next Thursday against University of the Southwest.
