Lady Pilots Off to School-Record Start, Begin GCAC Play Thursday

January 07, 2009

The 2008-09 LSUS Lady Pilots, led by point guard Valerie Huizar, are off to a school-record 10-1 start, and will enter Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play on Thursday night with a school-record eight game winning streak.

“This is fun,” said LSUS Head Coach Ronnie Howell.  “Coming in to the season, I really thought we had a chance to win some games and have a pretty good year, but I never anticipated this.”

According to Coach Howell, several factors have played a key part in the team’s early season success, including junior college transfer Valerie Huizar.  Huizar, who came to LSUS after spending the previous two years at Lon Morris College, currently leads the Lady Pilots in scoring (14.7 PPG) and assists (5.4 APG).

“To be honest, I can’t really believe that we are 10-1 right now,” commented Huizar.  “However, we have worked really hard over the past four months to be where we are, and it’s nice to see the hard work pay off.”

LSUS will begin GCAC play on Thursday night when they take on the always-tough Xavier University Gold Nuggets at The Dock.  In order for the Lady Pilots to continue their quest for a conference title and stay in the hunt, they cannot afford to take one night off, beginning tomorrow night.

The Lady Pilots have never won more than 13 games in any season during the program’s short history.  However, if the first eleven games are any indication of what’s to come, this season looks to be like one for the record books.
