Lady Pilots Knock Off No. 22 Xavier-NO

January 09, 2009

Shreveport, La. – The LSUS Lady Pilots improved on the school-record start Thursday night, defeating No. 22 Xavier University-New Orleans 60-55 and extending their winning streak to nine games.

LSUS trailed 55-54 with two minutes left to play after a made field goal by Xavier’s Brittany Powell, but a made field goal by Whitney Hollins gave LSUS the lead back for good, as the Lady Pilots’ defense would hold the Gold Nuggets scoreless over the final two minutes of play.

Xavier had a chance to tie the game on its’ final possession, but a huge defensive stand and two made free throws by Tish Flowers in the final seconds helped lift the Lady Pilots to a victory in the conference opener.

LSUS point guard Valerie Huizar scored a game-high 20 points in the win, while also dishing out a game-high seven assists.  Callie Davis finished with nine points and five rebounds, including two big offensive rebounds in the final minute.

LSUS (11-1) is now just two wins shy of tying a school record for most victories in a season, and they will look to move closer to that total on Saturday night when they face Spring Hill College at 5:00 p.m. at The Dock.
