Lady Pilots Improve to 2-0

November 12, 2008

The LSUS Lady Pilots blew open a tight game with a barrage of 3-pointers midway through the first half, allowing them to roll over Jarvis Christian College 79-64 on Tuesday night at The Dock.

The Lady Bulldogs led 15-14 seven minutes into the contest before a pair of 3-pointers by Whitney Hollins, along with single 3s by Valerie Huizar and Jamien Arvie (11 points), staked the home team to a 28-17 advantage four minutes later.

Back-to-back 3-pointers from Huizar allowed the Lady Pilots (2-0) to stretch their lead to 19 points with a minute to play in the first half.

"We got in a tad bit of foul trouble in the first half and they hit a couple of easy shots on us," LSUS coach Ronnie Howell said. "But I was proud that we never let the game get under 10. Overall, we finished the game well, which is something we've had trouble doing in the past.

LSUS didn't get away totally clean, however. The Lady Bulldogs (1-1) fought back from a 20-point deficit moments into the second half to get within 50-38 five minutes into the half. But the Lady Pilots answered with four different players scoring five straight buckets to go back in front 60-40 midway through the second half. That run included four points off a technical foul on Jarvis Christian coach Elissia Burwell.

Huizar was one of three Lady Pilots with 14 points in the contest. Hollins and Callie Davis also had 14.

"Paul Quinn ran a similar defense with a lot of traps last week, so we were better prepared for Jarvis to do the same," Huizar said. "Even though they got back in the game, we didn't let it rattle us. We just settled down and ran our offense. We weathered the storm."

The Lady Pilots won the game on the boards where they outrebounded the visitors 49-38, snagging 10 more offensive boards. Dominique Mathis topped Jarvis with 13 points while Vashunta Johnston added 12 and Veronica Hendrix 10.
