Lady Pilots Fall in GCAC Championship

Hattiesburg, Miss. - #13 William Carey University women’s soccer team captured the 2007 GCAC Championship with a 6-1 victory of LSU-Shreveport Saturday night at the WCU Soccer Complex.

Carey jumped all over the Lady Pilots for the start scoring two goals in the opening five minutes of play as Shanya Turner found Natalia Nino in the 2nd minute of play for the opening goal and then hooked up with Aimi Beresford in the 5th minute of play to the give the Lady Crusaders a 2-0 advantage.

LSUS settled down after the tough start and trimmed the Carey lead to 2-1 with a goal from Rachel Alexander in the 24th minute. But the Lady Crusaders went back on the attack and reestablished their two goal lead in the 36th minute with a goal from GCAC player of the year Shannon Steffan.

Carey broke the game wide open in the 54th minute with a goal from Linda Garcia. Jeana Erickson sealed the championship with two goals in the 86th and 87th minutes of play.

By advancing to the GCAC championship game, the Lady Pilots clinched a spot in next week's Region XIII Tournament.
