Lady Pilots earn #3 seed in GCAC tournament with 4-1 win over Lady Blazers

October 22, 2005

Shreveport, LA---The LSUS Lady Pilots (11-3, 2-2) ended their freshman season in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference with a 4-1 victory over the Belhaven College Lady Blazers (4-11-1, 1-2-1) Saturday afternoon at The Swamp. Just 2:26 into the first half, Lady Blazers Robin Emfinger found the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. The Lady Pilots however bounced back four unanswered goals to take their GCAC regular season finale 4-1.

After a nine game win streak was snapped after a 3-2 loss at the hands of the 24th ranked University of Mobile Rams last Friday, the Lady Pilots were 0-2 in conference play and in danger of not reaching the post season. The Lady Pilots however answered with a 2-0 decision over Spring Hill College Sunday afternoon, which set the stage for Saturday’s contest between the Lady Pilots and the Lady Blazers who were both looking to sew up a spot in the GCAC Tournament which is to be held in Mobile, AL beginning October 28.

Things looked good for the Lady Blazers early as Lindsey Young capitalized on a poor clearing attempt by the LSUS defense and sent Emfinger in all alone on LSUS goal Keeper Sarah McLean.  Emfinger placed a perfect ball in the bottom left corner of the net passed a defenseless McLean to give the Lady Blazers a 1-0 lead just 2:26 into the first half.

The Lady Pilots managed to even the score after Kristin Hardin was fouled in the box while on a partial breakaway which allowed Michelle Williamson to drive home her 4th penalty kick of the year to tie the game at 1-1.

LSUS poured on the pressure throughout the entire first half, out shooting the Lady Blazers 13-2, and managed to capitalize on a loose ball in front of the net after a booming throw in by Katrina Blackwell which was collected by Calandre Singh and struck passed Lady Blazer goal keeper Allyson Claiborne putting the Lady Pilots up 2-1 at the 24:34 mark of the half.

The Lady Pilots managed to put the game away early in the second half when midfielder Julia Vaughan drove a shot off the hands of Claiborne which deflected off the crossbar and in for her first goal of the season at the 52:16 mark. Just 4:12 later, Williamson collected her second goal of the game after a Hannah Jennings corner kick was collected by Singh who set up Williamson for her 9th goal of the year.

LSUS has finished the GCAC regular season with a 2-2 record which makes them the #3 seed at the Conference Tournament which will be held in Mobile, AL beginning Friday, October 28th. The Lady Pilots will have a chance to avenge a 3-1 season opening loss at the hands of William Carey College (3-7-1, 2-1-1) in the semi-final match up which is scheduled for Friday at 4:30pm. The winner will advance to the finals and take on the winner of the University of Mobile (9-4-1, 4-0) versus Spring Hill College (3-8-2, 1-2-1) at 7:00pm Saturday night.
