Lady Pilots drop season opener to Wildcats, 66-61

November 09, 2004

Shreveport, La- The LSUS Lady Pilots took the floor versus the Wiley College Wildcats in their 2004-2005 season home opener Tuesday night at the LSUS Gymnasium. In the end it was the Wildcats who escaped with a 66-61 win.

In the dying moments of the second half the Lady Pilots found themselves down 62-61 with a wide open look from the top of the three-point line for Dyamond Hogg which rolled around the rim and was rebounded by the Wildcats. The Wildcats then made good on two free-throw attempts, and forced a turnover with 2 seconds left as LSUS was racing down the floor in an attempt to tie it at 64. After making good on two more free-throw attempts, the Wildcats had iced their first win of the season.

“The difference was we bailed them out of trouble by fouling on shots we want them to take” concluded Lady Pilot head coach Ronnie Howell. LSUS sent the Wildcats to the free-throw line 34 times who made good on 26 of the 34 attempts.

“A combination of too many fouls and too many unforced turnovers killed us in the end”

LSUS struggled from the field shooting only 33% from the field, and were only 6-24 from beyond the three-point line. The Wildcats finished 19-49 from the field, 2-6 from beyond the three-point line.

Amber Boykins of the Wildcats led all scorers with 15 points and picked up 6 rebounds. Tiffany Miller and Tameka Beamon finished with 11, followed by Shayeisha Bussey with 10 points.

The Lady Pilots had 10 players tally the score sheet. Amanda Castle led the way with 14 on 3-6 shooting and making good on 7-11 free throw attempts. Dyamond Hogg finished with 10 points, followed by 2003-2004 Lady Pilot leading scorer Renalda Stafford who had 9 points on 3-4 shooting. Marcia Sphyhalski pulled in a game high 9 rebounds for the Lady Pilots.

The Lady Pilots now must look ahead to Friday night when they will play host to Paul Quinn College. “We are going to have to regroup and work hard until Friday. If we get the same effort Friday night and shoot better than 30% from the field, we are going to be just fine” finished Howell.

Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30pm Friday night. The LSUS men’s team will play immediately following the conclusion of the women’s game versus the Southwestern Assemblies of God University.
