Lady Pilots Defeat Spring Hill, 62-58
January 11, 2009
SHREVEPORT, La. – The LSUS Lady Pilots picked up a hard-fought 62-58 win over the Spring Hill Lady Badgers in Gulf Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday night at The Dock.
With LSUS entering tonight’s game on a school-record nine-game winning streak, it looked on paper as though the Lady Pilots would easily handle a Lady Badger team that had won just three times in eleven tries so far this season. However, a scrappy Lady Badger team gave the Lady Pilots all they wanted in their bid for an upset.
A Tish Flowers three-point basket broke open a 55-55 tie at the 1:38 mark in the second half, giving LSUS a three-point lead, but the Lady Badgers tied the game at 58 on a three of their own by Sharidan Hollis with just 48 seconds remaining.
With the game tied at 58, Whitney Hollins knocked down a pair of free throws to give the Lady Pilots a two-point advantage with 19 seconds left. On Spring Hill’s next possession, Flowers came up with a huge steal and then Janai Sells sealed the game at the free-throw line, connecting on two with four seconds on the clock.
Sells finished with 12 points from off the bench to lead the Lady Pilots, while Valerie Huizar was the only other Lady Pilot in double figures with 10.
After knocking off No. 22 Xavier on Thursday and winning tonight to move to 2-0 in conference play, the Lady Pilots could very well find themselves nationally ranked for the first time in school history in next week’s rankings. LSUS (12-1) has now won ten consecutive games and is just one win away from tying the school record for most wins in a season.
The Lady Pilots will have the opportunity to tie the record next Thursday when they take on conference foe William Carey in Hattiesburg.
