Lady Pilots Crush Belhaven 6-0

October 02, 2007

Shreveport, La. - The LSUS women's soccer team dominated Belhaven, 6-0, in a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference contest Tuesday afternoon at "The Swamp" on the LSUS campus.  LSUS moved to 8-3 on the season and boasts a 3-0 mark in GCAC play, while Belhaven fell to 4-8 on the year and 0-4 in conference action.

Julia Vaughan got the Lady PIlots on the scoreboard just 21 seconds into the game on her team-leading 10th goal of the season.  After controlling the opening kickoff, Layton Yancey made a clean pass through the middle to Calandre Singh who tapped the ball Vaughan for the game's first goal.

Nearly 26 minutes later, senior Brenna Bussart claimed her first goal of the afternoon off of a Shaderia Evans corner kick.  Evans' corner flew over several Belhaven defenders before Bussart leaped into the air and knocked a header into the back of the net.

Less than one minute later, Bussart struck gold again with her second goal of the contest.  Julia Vaughan was credited with an assist on the play.

Freshman Holly Jaynes kept the ball rolling for the Lady Pilots with a goal in the 31st minute off a rebounded shot attempt by Bussart.  Bussart's initial shot attempt was blocked by a Belhaven defender, but after the ball bounced around a couple of times, Jaynes squared up and lofted a shot over the goalie to give LSUS a 4-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Lady Pilots would not let up in the second half as senior Rachel Alexander continued the onslaught with a goal just eight minutes into the second half.  Bussart and freshman Michelle Zamani both assisted on Alexander's goal.

At the 72:45 mark and en route to an easy victory, Kristen Schaefer made the victory a little sweeter by recording the first goal of her collegiate career.  Schaefer, a junior defender, switched to the forward position at the 65 minute mark and made the most of her opportunity.  After firing off four shots in seven minutes, including one off of the post,  Schaefer finally found the back of the net on her last attempt.  Schaefer's goal would be the last of the game, giving LSUS a 6-0 victory.

The Lady Pilots tallied 25 shots on the afternoon, 10 of which were on goal, while Belhaven had only 4 shots and 3 shots on goal.  Sophomore Kelsi McNew played the entire game in goal for LSUS and picked up 3 saves in the contest.

The Lady Pilots will take on 17th-ranked William Carey on Friday, Oct. 5 beginning at 3:00 P.M. at "The Swamp."  This will be the first of two meetings between the two teams on the season.  LSUS and William Carey have identical conference records and will battle for sole possession of first place in the GCAC on Friday afternoon.
