Lady Pilots come up short on the road versus Lady Blazers

Jackson, MS---The LSUS Lady Pilots (8-15, 2-8) traveled to Jackson, MS Thursday night to take on the Belhaven College Lady Blazers (8-12, 3-6) at Rugg Arena. The Lady Pilots were in control early jumping out to a 10-2 lead, but a late scoring drought in the second half was the difference as the Lady Blazers went on to win by a final score of 59-44.

 

Trish Phillips and Renalda Stafford combined for 10 LSUS points in the first 4:00 of play to give the Lady Pilots a 10-2 lead. After a Belhaven timeout, the Lady Blazers went on a 14-6 run to tie the score at 16-16 time with 11:11 remaining in the first half.

 

A Marcia Spyhalski jump shot from the free throw line put LSUS up 21-19. The Lady Blazers however answered with a 16-5 run to end the first half which was capped off by an Amanda Barber three point shot off the backboard as time expired to put Belhaven up 35-26 at the half. The Lady Blazers out shot LSUS by a margin of 56% (14-25) to 40% (10-25) in the half. Belhaven was 4-10 from beyond the three point line while the Lady Pilots were 3-9.

 

The Lady Pilots trimmed the Belhaven lead to as little as 2 points early in the second half, but found themselves trialing 47-37 with 12:18 remaining. Each team struggled to score for the remainder of the game as there were only 19 total points put on the board in the final 12 minutes, with LSUS accounting for only 7. The Lady Blazers went on to win by a final score of 59-44.

 

Jennifer Kopszywa led the way for the Lady Blazers with 15 points. Nicole Jordan added 14 points and 5 rebounds while Megan Stock pulled down a game high 8 rebounds and 6 assists. Belhaven finished shooting 51% (23-45) from the field which included knocking down 7-18 three point attempts.

 

The Lady Pilots created 25 turnovers but were credited with 20 of their own and were out rebounded 41-27. Renalda Stafford finished with a game high 16 points and added 4 assists and 2 steals, but was credited with 7 turnovers in the game. Trish Phillips pitched in with 10 points and 1 assist. Kendera Monette picked up 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals, continuing her steady play of late for the Lady Pilots.

 

LSUS will be in action again Saturday night versus the Southern University of New Orleans Knights at the Dock. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00pm.
