HAMMOND – Southeastern Louisiana’s Carmen Labat scored 16 points to lead a balanced offensive attack, as the Lady Lions snapped a five-game losing streak with a 70-41 victory over LSU-Shreveport Wednesday night at the University Center.
Southeastern (2-6) led throughout and put together a solid outing on both ends of the floor. The Lady Lions hit 40.9 percent (9-for-22) from three-point range, while recording 19 assists versus only 12 turnovers. Junior guard Alejandra Iglesias led the way with six assists.
On the defensive end, Southeastern forced LSU-Shreveport (8-3) into 23 turnovers and recorded 16 steals in the contest. The Lady Pilots shot just 28.3 percent (15-for-53) from the field, including 4.3 percent (1-for-23) from behind the arc. Junior forward Jazmin Cain led the Lady Lions with a season-high four steals, to go with her game-high three blocked shots and 10 rebounds. Sophomore forward Cara Porter also finished with four steals for Southeastern.
Labat and Tina Wilson, who scored 13 points, were the lone Lady Lions to score in double figures, but 11 different Southeastern players scored in the contest. Sophomore guard Brooke Necaise and Porter added nine points each. LSU-Shreveport’s Jessica Kelly scored a game-high 17 points, but was 0-for-7 from three-point range. Kacie Cryer added 11 points for the Lady Pilots.
Southeastern used a 14-5 run early in the second half to push a 14-point halftime advantage to 23, as a Kristy Carlin score put the Lady Lions up 49-23 with 10:42 remaining. LSU-Shreveport would get no closer than 20 the rest of the way, as Labat scored nine points down the stretch to thwart any hope of a Lady Pilot comeback.
The Lady Lions scored the first six points of the game and never trailed in the contest, although the Lady Pilots temporarily knotted the score at 10 with 12:19 remaining in the opening period. Southeastern responded with a 13-2 run, fueled by Iglesias’ three points and three assists, to take a 23-12 lead with 8:42 remaining. LSU-Shreveport pulled within seven late in the half, but Southeastern scored the period’s final seven points to take a 30-16 lead into the break.
Southeastern will return to action on Friday, when they host Belhaven at 7 p.m. in the University Center. The game, which will be broadcast live in the Hammond area on KSLU 90.9 FM and on the internet at www.LionSports.net, will be Southeastern’s final non-conference contest before opening Southland Conference play at Texas-San Antonio on Jan. 5.
