January 28, 2007
New Orleans, LA---Despite a 19 point 10 rebound performance from Pilots junior forward Jamon Morris, the LSUS Pilots (14-5, 5-4) dropped a 77-64 decision to the Southern University of New Orleans (10-7, 7-3) Saturday afternoon on the ampus of Delgado Community College.
The Pilots jumped out to a 7-0 lead after Morris collected his second field goal at the 18:15 mark.
James Hudson powered the Knights to a 13-0 run collecting eight of his 10 total points over the next four minutes which had the Knights ahead 13-7.
Blake Whittle scored five unanswered points for the Pilots as the Pilots regained the lead 16-13 at the 10:55 mark. The Pilots led by as many as five points down the stretch of the first half and led 31-28 at the break.
There were eight ties and seven lead changes throughout the duration of the second half. Two free throw attempts by Willie Chaney at the 6:57 mark gave the Knights a 55-53 lead; a lead they would never relinquish.
Morris connected on back-to-back free throw attempts with 1:57 remaining to cut the Knights lead to 64-61. LSUS promptly fouled Hudson which sent him to the line for bonus free throw attempts. A long rebound by Chaney after a Hudson miss led to a Marcus Scott three pointer which proved to be the dagger for the Pilots who trailed 67-61 with 1:15 remaining.
Scott led the Knights to a 77-64 victory with a game high 21 points. Dominic Perry added 18 points while Chaney and Kevin Thomas added 12 points a piece. The Knights shot a combined 48% from the floor which included a 6-of-7 performance from beyond the arc in the second half.
Morris powered his way to his team leading 10th double-double of the season as he finished with a team high 19 points and 10 rebounds. Kyile Byrd and Whittle each added 14 points while Greg Tyer pitched in with six points, seven rebounds, and two blocked shots.
The Pilots ended the first half of the GCAC regular season losing three of their last four contests. They will return to action Thursday night at The Dock as they will look to get back on the winning track as they will play host to the Dillard University Blue Devils. The Pilots defeated the Blue Devils 80-65 January 6th in New Orleans. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30pm.
