Jewell tosses complete game gem; Pilots beat Wolfpack 5-0

Shreveport, LA---The night cap of day one at the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament featured the No. 2 seeded LSUS Pilots taking on the No. 5 seed Loyola University Wolfpack. LSUS starter Kevin Jewell scattered just two hits and five walks leading the Pilots to a 5-0 victory with a complete game shutout.
In contrast to games one and two of the GCAC Tournament, the Pilots and Wolfpack squared off in a pitchers duel. Sal Greco toed the rubber for the Wolfpack and held the Pilots scoreless through five innings. A leadoff walk to Dusty Maddox in the bottom of the 6th inning was followed by a base hit bunt by Tyler Williams that was fielded by Greco who tried to force a throw to first base that found its way down the right field line allowing Maddox to score from first with Williams advancing to third. Steffan Primeaux followed with a sacrifice fly to right field which scored Williams giving the Pilots a 2-0 lead.
Williams started an 8th inning rally with a one out single to center field. Primeaux followed with an RBI double to left field which spelled the end for Greco. James Blakeman came on in relief and followed with walks to Riley Cook and Colin Moro which loaded the bases for Pilots shortstop Brandon Magierowski.
Magierowski delivered a two RBI single to left field scoring Cook and Moro which stretched the Pilot lead to 5-0. Blakeman managed to escape the one out jam with runners on second and third with just one out by enticing an infield pop out to Pilot catcher Brent Lavalee, and striking out Bryan Cooksey looking to end the inning.
The Wolfpack threatened in the 9th after Jewell walked Kevin Fontenot and Marc Jaynes, but the crafty left hander preserved the shutout by getting designated hitter Coleman Hardie to fly out to Dustin Bissonnette to end the ball game giving the Pilots a 5-0 victory.
Greco (3-1) was tagged with loss after completing 7.1 innings pitched while allowing just six hits, four runs (two earned), while walking two and collecting two strikeouts. Andy Rodriguez and Hardie each collected singles accounting for the Wolfpack's two hits in the contest.
Jewell (7-2) scattered two hits and five walks in 9.0 innings pitched just one night after being named to the 2006 GCAC All-Conference Team. Williams led the Pilot offense with a 3-4 performance which included two runs scored and an RBI. Primeaux finished 1-3 with two RBI while Magierowski was 1-4 with two RBI.
The Wolfpack will look to respond with a win tomorrow against the Belhaven College Blazers in an elimination contest beginning at 12:00pm.
LSUS advances in the winners bracket and will take on conference rival William Carey College in the night cap which will begin at 7:00pm.
