Jessica Kelly earns GCAC All-Conference and Newcomer of the Year honors
March 06, 2006
Shreveport, LA---The LSUS Lady Pilots battled their way to a 13-12 overall record in the 2005-2006 season before dropping a 49-58 decision in the first round of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament to Loyola University. The 13 wins tied the single season win record that was set last season. This year’s success was due in large part to a newcomer to the LSUS Athletics family in Jessica Kelly. The 5’8 junior shooting guard from Bossier City was selected to the GCAC All-Conference Team and was also awarded the Newcomer of the Year award.
Kelly led the Lady Pilots scoring attack averaging 15.8 points and 2.2 assists per game. Her athleticism and feel for the game on the defensive end also led to her leading in steals (77) and in blocked shots (22).
“It was a lot of fun to work with Jessica this season. She is a player that you can depend on night in and night out to perform up to her ability,” commented Lady Pilots Head Coach Ronnie Howell.
“JK” reached double-digit scoring figures in all 25 games this season, which included a season high, 22 points against Wiley College, and a team high four double-doubles. Kelly seemed to rise to the occasion against the best of opponents as she poured in 17 points and collected eight rebounds against Southeastern Louisiana University, and she averaged 20 points and eight rebounds against the top seeded University of Mobile Lady Rams.
n the last game of her junior season against Loyola, Kelly collected a game high 17 points and 10 rebounds.
“With hard work in the classroom, the weight room, and in the gym, Jessica could even improve upon what was a very solid junior season. We are very excited about the group of ladies we have coming back next year, and Jessica will be a big part of our team,” concluded Howell.
