Jackson's Free Throws Complete LSUS Comeback
January 06, 2009
HAWKINS, Texas. - Two free throws by LSUS senior Clarke Jackson with 4.2 seconds left in the game lifted the Pilots to a 60-58 victory over the No. 25 Jarvis Christian Bulldogs on Monday night.
The Pilots trailed 36-25 at the break and fell behind by as many as 13 points in the second half before rallying to upset the nationally ranked Bulldogs.
A Deveon Jenkins free throw with 35 seconds remaining tied the game at 58. With the Pilots holding the ball for the last shot, Jackson was fouled on a potential game-winning three-point shot. He then missed the first free throw, but successfully connected on the next two to give the Pilots a two-point lead.
A desperation half court shot by JCC's Mahershal Simonet bounced off the backboard as time expired.
LSUS earned the victory on Monday night by pressuring and forcing Jarvis into 29 turnovers in the contest. The Pilots converted those turnovers into 22 points, 16 of which came in the second-half comeback.
Senior Chris Gatlin had one of his best games in a Pilot uniform, finishing with a game-high 24 points, including several big second-chance baskets late in the game.
LSUS (7-5) will enter Gulf Coast Athletic Conference play on Thursday night when they take on the Xavier Gold Rush at 7:30 p.m. at The Dock.
