Gonsoulin named RRAC Player of the Week

WACO, Tex. - Ridge Gonsoulin of LSU Shreveport and Alex Padilla of Texas Wesleyan University were selected as the first Red River Athletic Conference Baseball Co-Players of the Week for the 2012 season, while Rory Young of the University of Texas-Brownsville collected the RRAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week award for the dates of Jan.30-Feb. 5. 

Gonsoulin, a sophomore right fielder from New Iberia, La., drove in five runs as the Pilots opened the season with a three-game sweep of William Carey College (Miss.). In the first game, he was 3-for-3 at the plate with a home run and four RBI's en route to a 7-1 result. He also contributed an RBI in the second game and scored twice in a 9-2 rout that closed the series. For the week, Gonsoulin was 4-for-11 with four runs scored and two steals.

Padilla, a junior catcher from Long Beach, Calif., was 3-for-5 as the Rams achieved a 2-0 start last week. He opened by going 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI as TWU defeated Hillsdale College (Okla.), 4-1. Padilla then knocked in two of the Rams' three runs -- including a squeeze bunt in the bottom of the ninth inning -- during a 3-2 win over Lubbock Christian University (Texas). He also threw out two base-runners as the Rams edged the fourth-ranked Chaps.

Young, a junior pitcher from Chase, B.C., tossed a shutout in his season debut to earn a 9-0 victory over the University of Houston-Victoria (Texas). In five innings of work, he allowed just three hits and struck out eight hitters while walking three. UTB is off to a 5-3 start on the season.

Austin Atwell of Northwood University (Texas), Josh Cappello of the University of the Southwest (N.M.), and Joel Fernandez of the University of Texas-Brownsville were also nominated for player of the week. Additional pitcher of the week nominees included Matt Lackie of LSUS, Derek Vaughn of TWU, Emory Weatherton of USW, and Clayton Woodruff of NU.
