Frye sparks Pilots offense in 8-4 win over Belhaven

March 19, 2004

LSUS (16-9, 8-5) played host to the Belhaven College Blazers Friday night in a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference showdown. It was the Blazers who jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Jonathan Robertson capped off the first with a two run homerun off starter Daniel Welch. Belhaven starter Daniel Hearn however was unable to find the strike zone in the first as he walked the first four batters he faced. The Pilots capitalized as they scored 2 runs in the inning without registering a hit.

The Blazers got to Welch once again in the second as they advanced runners to second and third with no outs in the inning, which brought Sam Alphonse out of the bullpen for the Pilots. Alphonse managed to escape the inning without allowing either runner to score which kept the game 3-2 in favor of the Blazers.

Belhaven also made an early pitching change as they brought Jonathan Fultz from the pen in the second inning for Hearn. The Pilots managed to score four runs in the bottom half of the third inning after a Patrick Jolley RBI single and a bases loaded triple down the right field line by Chris Frye to clear the bases. After the 3rd inning the Pilots led 6-3 and never looked back. Reliever Sam Alphonse (2-2) pitched 8 innings only allowing 7 hits and a single run in the ninth to collect the win in the 8-4 Pilot victory. Jonathan Fultz suffered the loss to make his record 1-2 on the year.

Chris Frye finished the game 3-4 which included two doubles, a triple, 3 RBI and a run scored for the Pilots. Wesley Gray pitched in with a 2-3 effort while scoring 2 runs and collecting one RBI. Scott Ewing and Ashley Chism were both 2-4 at the plate for the Blazers. Robertson was 1-4 in the game with his first inning 2 run homerun.

LSUS and Belhaven will be back at it again tomorrow afternoon in double-header action which will begin at 3:00pm at Pilot Field.
