Bacone sneaks by Southwest

Kyle Piteryga smacked a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Bacone College to a 4-3 victory over University of the Southwest in a Red River Athletic Conference Tournament elimination game Sunday afternoon.

Bacone goes on to play in a third-round game at 3 p.m. Monday against the loser of Sunday's 6:30 p.m. game matching Texas at Brownsville and Texas College.

With the score tied, 3-3, Enrique Meza led off the bottom of the ninth by getting hit by a pitch. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a fielder's choice.

Bacone took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning, only to see Southwest tie the game with two runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.

Cody McBride, the third Bacone pitcher, was the winner. Clinton Graham was the losing pitcher for Southwest.

Anthony Seabolt and Lester Gonzalez had two hits each for Bacone while Josh Capello, Eric Alvarez, and Frank Arrelano had two hits each for Southwest.

 Pilots dominate Texas Wesleyan

Jared Mortensen fanned 11 Texas Wesleyan batters on the way to his 10th win of the season to keep his Pilots unbeaten in the RRAC Tournament with a 16-8 win over the Rams.

LSUS (46-4) has won 11 games in a row and could make their second consecutive appearance in the RRAC finals with a win tomorrow against UT-Brownsville which begins at 11:30 a.m.

Ridge Gonsoulin had a monster day at the plate for the Pilots driving in four runs with a 4-for-5 day at the plate while Kyle Pearson knocked in three going 2-for-3. Greco had three hits and three RBIs while Kade Billeaudeaux collected two hits in three trips with a run batted in.

The Pilots finished the day with 15 hits while the Rams ended the day with a dozen.

 UT-Brownsville need extras to get by Texas College

Zach Cordia's sacrifice fly scored Scott Frazier for the game-winning run in the 10th inning over Texas College, 10-9,  in their Red River Athletic Conference Tournament second-round game Sunday at Pilot Field.

 UTB/TSC (30-24) now plays Louisiana State University-Shreveport at 11:30 a.m. Monday in a meeting of the tournament's last two unbeaten teams. Texas College (27-23-1) plays Bacone College at 3 p.m. Monday in an elimination game.

The Scorpions (30-24) have played nine straight one-run games against a conference opponent. UTB/TSC, which held off Texas Wesleyan University Saturday by a 4-3 score, is 4-5 in those games.

 UTB/TSC jumped out to a 6-0 lead after its first two at-bats, but Texas College quickly cut into the lead with three runs in the bottom of the second. The score stood at 6-3 until the seventh, when both teams scored. The Scorpions went up 7-3 on a solo homer by Colby Henscey, but the Steers responded with two runs to make it 7-5. UTB/TSC tallied two runs in the top of the ninth to make it 9-5. Texas College scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game, 9-9, and left the winning run on third base.

The Scorpions had 15 hits, including three by Henscey, who drove in four runs. Henscey, who was 3-for-4, also scored three runs. Ricardo Alanis went 3-for-5, while Zach Cordia, K.J. Semien, and Robert J. Garza had two hits each.

The Steers had 10 hits, two each by Agustin Enriquez, Blaine Shackelford and Matthew McEuen.
