Texas College downs Bacone

Chris Blackmon pitched seven strong innings to lead Texas College to a 7-2 victory over Bacone College in the first game of the Red River Athletics Conference Tournament Saturday at Pilot Field.

Blackmon (8-5) allowed only one hit in seven innings, striking out six and walking two. He had a no-hitter going through the first four innings. Colby Ryan pitched the final two innings. Justin McGee (3-6) went the distance for Bacone. Only two of the seven runs he allowed were earned.

The Steers had eight hits, two each by Blaine Shackelford and Corey Heidebrecht, who also scored twice and drove in two runs.

Texas College took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, and went ahead by a 6-0 score with a single run in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Texas College advances to play the winner of Game 2 of the tournament, matching Texas at Brownsville vs. Texas Wesleyan University.

Scorpions squeak by Texas Wesleyan

Colby Henscey launched a towering three-run home run in the third inning to jump-start the UTB/TSC offense in a 7-6 win over Texas Wesleyan University in a Red River Athletic Conference Tournament first round game Saturday at Pilot Field.

The win moves the Scorpions (29-24) into a second-round game against Texas College (28-22-1) at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. TWU plays at 3 p.m. Sunday against the winner of the Saturday night game between LSU-Shreveport and University of the Southwest.

Henscey's homer put the Scorpions ahead at the time, 3-2. It was the boost the offense needed, as the Scorpions never trailed the rest of the way. TWU came back later from a 5-3 deficit to tie the game, 5-5, and cut a 7-5 lead to 7-6, but could not bring home the tying run.

It was another dramatic game for the Scorpions, who have now played in 20 one-run games in 2012. UTB/TSC has played in eight straight one-run games against RRAC teams, and are 3-5 in that stretch. The win also snapped a six-game losing streak for the Scorpions that ended the regular season.

Zach Armstrong (6-3) went seven and one-thirds innings for the Scorpions, and was relieved by Kale Wierenga, who earned his third save. Nolan Barbee (7-3), the fourth TWU pitcher, took the loss.

UTB/TSC outhit TWU, 12-10, with Gus Henggeler leading the Scorpions with three hits. Four players had two hits each for TWU.

No. 1 LSU Shreveport crushes Southwest

The Pilots pounded a dozen hits as their seven-run third inning rally lifted them past the Southwest Mustangs 13-1 in seven innings at Pilot Field.

Stephen Hobbins delivered the big blow in the seven-run third with a three-run homer over the left field wall for a 6-0 LSUS advantage. Matt Lackie (10-0) held the Mustangs to just five hits and allowed just one earned run in six innings of work walking just three and striking out a dozen.

Erine Torres (4-6) suffered the loss for Southwest as the starter gave up a total of six runs-five earned-in just two and 2/3 innings pitched as the Pilots scorched seven hits. Torres walked two and struck out two.

Manny Estrada also went deep for the Pilots with a two-run shot in the fifth inning.

Southwest made a total of seven errors in the field but 10 of the 13 runs for LSUS were earned. LSUS has now won ten straight while Southwest had their six-game winning streak snapped.
