Cook propels Pilots over Knights
April 26, 2006
Shreveport, LA---Riley Cook delivered a game winning two out RBI single in the bottom of the 7th inning to give the LSUS Pilots (33-19) a 4-3 victory in game one of Wednesday’s double-header over the Northwood University Knights (26-23). In game two, Cook delivered what proved to be a game winning three-run homerun in the bottom of the 1st inning propelling the Pilots to an 8-0 victory and two game sweep over the Knights.
Game one of Wednesday’s double-header entered the bottom of the 7th inning tied at 3-3. Dusty Maddox drove a one out single to center field, and promptly advanced to third base on a Tyler Williams single to left field, placing runners at the corners with one out. The Knights elected to intentionally walk Steffan Primeaux to load the bases which brought the Pilots leading hitter Colin Moro to the plate. Knights relief pitcher Alberto Gutierrez recovered from a 3-0 count and forced a fly ball out to shallow center by Moro for the second out of the inning. Cook however responded with a game winning RBI single to left field off Gutierrez which gave the Pilots a 4-3 victory.
Cook finished 3-4 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Pilot offense. Josh Wheat (1-2) collected the win in relief of Pilot starter Blake Pinkston after completing 4.0 innings allowing two runs on five hits while striking out four.
In game two, Cook belted his first homerun of the season over the left field wall off Knights starter Justin Ashford (7-2) giving the Pilots an early 3-0 lead which the Pilots would never relinquish.
Kris Marks (1-1) threw his first career complete game for the Pilots who went on to take game two by a final score of 8-0. Marks allowed just four hits and one walk while collecting six strikeouts.
Cook led the Pilot offense with three RBI and two runs scored while Maddox pitched in with a 2-2 performance which included a triple, two runs scored, and two stolen bases.
The Pilots will hit the road this upcoming weekend for a three game regular season finale against the University of Mobile Rams as they look to claim their second straight Gulf Coast Athletic Conference regular season championship. The Pilots trail the Belhaven College Blazers by one game heading into the final weekend. Game one is slated for 2:00pm, with games two and three scheduled to begin at 1:00pm Saturday.
