Blackwell earns Region XIII Player of the Week honors
September 14, 2005
Shreveport, LA--- The LSUS Lady Pilots soccer team has responded from back-to-back losses to begin the season with a current five game winning streak to improve to 5-2 in their inaugural season on the campus of LSUS. Lady Pilot leading scorer Katrina Blackwell, a freshman from Harker Heights, TX, scored two goals, including the game winning goal in a 4-2 victory over East Texas Baptist University (TX). The forward also added two goals and had an assist in the Lady Pilots’ 8-0 win over NCAA Division I opponent Texas Southern University, and recorded an assist in a 2-1 victory versus Millsaps College (MS), for a total of 10 points leading LSUS to a perfect 3-0 record on the week, and earning her Region XIII Player of the Week honors.
Despite being held off the score sheet the first two games of the season, Blackwell has collected a team high 19 points with eight goals and three assists. “We have started to come together as a team on the field, which I believe is a result of us becoming so close off the field. We just keep encouraging each other to get better and work harder and right now it is paying off,” explains Blackwell.
Lady Pilot’s starting goal keeper Sarah McLean attributes Blackwell’s success to her athleticism and excellent attitude and work ethic. “She has a lot of spirit and is always working hard and encouraging everyone else to work hard. Her speed and aggressiveness combined with how much fun she has playing the game makes her a great player and teammate,” concludes McLean.
In today’s sports world, it is often the offensive stars who receive all the attention and accolades. Lady Pilot head coach Jed Jones however attributes Blackwell’s recent success not only to her natural ability, but to the ability of the team to work within the implemented system. “The girls have bought into the system we have put in place. They are each playing within their ability and this week Katrina has been put in position to be successful and she capitalized on it. Next week it could be one of many other players. I am very proud of the effort our entire team has put forth these past two weeks and am very happy for Katrina,” concludes Jones who has collected the most wins in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference thus far this season.
The Lady Pilots will travel to Conway, AR Friday afternoon to take on Hendrix College (2-2) and will return home to The Swamp September 20th to play host to the LeTourneau University Lady Jackets (2-3). Kick-off is scheduled for 5:00pm.
