Belhaven Eliminates LSUS from GCAC Tournament
May 03, 2009
Hattiesburg, Miss. - LSUS' bid to win their fourth consecutive Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament came to an end Saturday night, as the Pilots dropped a 9-2 decision to Belhaven College.
Belhaven blew open a one-run contest with three runs in the seventh and eighth innings to knock the No. 2 seeded Pilots out of the tournament.
For the second straight day, the explosive LSUS offense struggled against Blazer pitching, as the Pilots recorded just seven hits and two runs on the night. Both of the LSUS runs came in the sixth, but the Pilots stranded two runners that inning and would never threaten again.
Shawn Diehl went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate for the Blazers, while Craig Dean finished 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs for the winners. Lake Eiland also homered for the second straight day against the Pilots.
Kyle Hunt picked up the win on the mound for Belhaven, while LSUS' Kory Kottenbrook was tagged with the loss.
Quinton Shamsabady was the only Pilot to register multiple hits with two.
LSUS (41-14) will now have to wait until next Friday to find out where they will be headed for the Regional Tournament. The 45-team bracket will be released on Friday at approximately 5:00 PM.
