Badgers upset No. 1 seeded Blazers, 11-8

Shreveport, LA---The Belhaven College Blazers and Spring Hill College Badgers squared off in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament opening contest at Pilots Field Wednesday afternoon. The two teams combined for 19 runs and 28 hits, but it was the Badgers who came out on top and upset the Blazers by a final score of 11-8.
GCAC Pitcher of the Year Brad Fultz toed the rubber for the Blazers and escaped an early second inning Badgers rally. Jeremy Koen singled to center for the Badgers first hit, and promptly advanced to second on a bunt base hit by Matt Parker. With runners at first and second, Badgers shortstop Drew Simms bunted a ball straight back to Fultz who threw to third for the force out. Fultz followed with a ground ball off the bat of Bill Saliski resulting in a 6-4-3 double play, ending the Badgers rally.
The Blazers scored the first run of the tournament in the bottom of the 3rd inning after back-to-back doubles by Thomas Royals and Bryan Bennett with one out off Badgers starter Koen. Koen managed to retire Buddy Wyrick and Scott Anderson to end the inning.
The Badgers capitalized on two Blazer errors in the top of the 4th including a bases loaded wild throw by shortstop David Gilbert allowing Parker and Sims to score. Billy Saliski followed with a two RBI single to left field to stretch the Badgers lead to 4-1.
SHC added two more runs in the 5th and led 6-1 before the Blazers mounted a three run rally that was highlighted by an RBI triple by David Gilbert which cut the lead to 6-4.
With two out in the top of the 6th inning, the Badgers chased BC’s Fultz from the mound who allowed four runs (two earned) on just two hits. Josh Coleman delivered the crushing blow with a two RBI double to left field putting the Badgers ahead 10-4.
BC managed to push across three runs of their own in the bottom of the 6th after Forrest Rollins led of the inning with a triple to center field, and later scored on an RBI single by Gilbert. Royals followed with his third hit of the game in the form of an RBI double, and scored on an error by SHC’s third baseman Matt Rozelle which cut the lead to 10-7.
Badgers reliever Tommy Giesaking took over in the 7th in relief of Koen and held the Blazers offense at bay, allowing just one run on two hits through the final three frames, as the Badgers went on to upset the No. 1 seeded Blazers by a final score of 11-8.
Fultz (8-3) allowed 10 runs (four earned) on 12 hits through 5.2 innings of work. Royals led the Blazers with a 4-5 performance at the plate which included two doubles, and four runs scored. Bryan Bennett added three hits while Gilbert finished 2-5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Koen was credited with the win after completing 6.0 innings pitched allowing seven runs (four earned) and striking out four. He also added a 2-3 performance at the plate which included an RBI. Coleman finished 3-5 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored, while Sims added a 3-4 effort which included three RBI, two runs scored, and a solo-homerun in the top of the 9th inning.
The Badgers will square off Thursday against the loser of the LSUS against Loyola University match-up, while the Blazers fall to the loser’s bracket and await the loser of the University of Mobile and William Carey College.
